Training with the Flat Bench
The flat bench represents the fundamental exercise for chest training. Bench presses on a flat bench with a barbell are one of the pillars of powerlifting, and the use of heavy loads combined with muscle synergy make it one of the most effective exercises for maximum strength and upper body hypertrophy. The primary muscle targeted by this exercise is the pectoralis major, with the anterior deltoids and triceps brachii also being involved to a lesser extent. Choosing to perform the version with elbows tucked to the body may lead to the opposite effect, with less emphasis on the pectoralis major in favor of other muscles involved in the exercise.
